With four seconds to play in the game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings, Luka Doncic hit a free throw to secure the win for his team and then turned his attention to a specific person who was sitting courtside: former Kings general manager and vice president Vlade Divac.
Doncic was waving and making gestures at Divac while saying something to him. When he moved to the bench of the Mavericks he appeared to be shouting, “he should’ve drafted me.” He continued pointing at Divac and yelling stuff once the game was over.
As a Kings executive in 2018, Divac made a highly criticized decision to pass on Doncic during the NBA Draft as Sacramento selected Marvin Bagley III with the second overall pick. While Luka went on to emerge as the face of the Mavericks franchise, a superstar and an MVP-caliber player, Bagley didn’t reach the expectations the Kings had and the club parted ways with him in 2022.
Divac had already stepped down from his position at the Kings in 2020. The Serbian legend also assumed responsibility for drafting Bagley while Doncic was available, saying “That was my decision.”
