After already doing it in January and February, Victor Wembanyama was named Rookie of the Month in the Western Conference for his outstanding performances in March. He’s now the first San Antonio Spurs player to do so since Tim Duncan.
Starting in 12 games throughout the month, the French center has been averaging 21.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, a league-leading 3.83 blocks and 1.17 steals in 31.7 minutes per game. According to the official press release, “he has led all rookies in scoring, rebounding and blocks for the month”.
The No.1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft has posted eight double-doubles in March, including “a season-high 40 points, 20 rebounds and 7 assists vs. the Knicks on March 29, becoming the first rookie with 40+ points and 20+ rebounds since Shaquille O’Neal (1992-93)”.
Moreover, the month of March “also included five 30-plus-point games from Wembanyama, which is most for a rookie in a calendar month since LeBron James in Dec. 2003”.
In the Eastern Conference, instead, Brandon Miller was named Rookie of the Month after averaging 18.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game for the Charlotte Hornets, where he’s currently playing another rookie like Vasilije Micic.
