France is hosting the 2024 Olympics, and the home crowd is expecting medals, especially in the basketball tournament, following a disappointing result at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. They are assembling a strong team, with Victor Wembanyama playing in his first major tournament.
The 2023/24 NBA Rookie of the Year is ready to make his country proud.
“Representing France adds a layer of motivation and energy. It’s patriotism and a lot of what I want to achieve in my career. I can’t accept losing to another country,” Wembanyama said to Maxime Aubin.
In addition to being named Rookie of the Year, Wembanyama also secured a spot on the NBA All-Defensive First Team, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game for the San Antonio Spurs.
France will compete against World champions Germany, Japan, and the winner of the OQT in Riga (Latvia, Georgia, Philippines, Brazil, Cameroon, and Montenegro).
