Jerry West, the man who’s silhouette graces the logo of the NBA, and the one who made sure that Kobe Bryant will go to the L.A. Lakers in 1996 had the best to say about the 37 year old superstar of the 16 times NBA champions.
We are going to see lots of messages like this as Kobe’s last season, and his career, in the NBA reaches its end, but when they come from legends like mr. West, they definitely mean so much
“20 years ago I had the opportunity to meet a 17 year old kid who had the dream to become one of the greatest NBA players of all time. I saw something really special in you and it didn’t have to do with your enormous skill at 17 years of age. You could almost feel this incredible determination and desire to compete and excel. 20 years later I look back. I was right. The Lakers were right. And I see this incredible basketball player with a resume that is almost second to none. It is a sad night, but a very special night to honor someone that has earned the respect not only of Lakers fans, but fans throughout the world and particularly all the NBA arenas.”
You have been an unbelievably special player. 5 NBA championships. Scoring championships. All Star games. Even though people will look at this and say what an amazing player you are, I don’t think that they will understand the enormous desire and this incredible fuel that drove you to be the person that you became. There are millions of kids throughout the world who you have inspired to be another Kobe Bryant. But tonight it is our chance to say goodbye to this incredible player who changed the landscape of the NBA. From all of us in the Golden State Warriors organization, and from all the fans in Bay area, I want to wish you the best going forward”.
And here’s the way the Warriors honored Kobe.
