As reported by Shams Charania, Joel Embiid has announced that he is signing a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 2023 NBA MVP will ink a three-year, $193 million maximum extension with the Sixers, with a player option in the 2028/29 season, per The Athletic.
This means the US national team player now has five years and $301 million remaining on his Philadelphia 76ers deal, making it one of the three richest contracts in NBA history.
Philadelphia selected Embiid in the 2014 NBA Draft as the third overall pick. During his decade with the Sixers, the 30-year-old has won the MVP award in 2023, received seven NBA All-Star honors, been selected once to the All-NBA First Team, four times to the Second Team, and three times to the All-Defensive Second Team. He has also been the NBA’s scoring champion for two consecutive years (2022, 2023).
Last season, Embiid played in 39 regular season games and averaged a career-high 37.4 points, along with 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists. However, he couldn’t help his team advance beyond the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
