The NBA season is approaching quickly, and teams are preparing also by going through Media Day duties. The San Antonio Spurs are no exceptions, and Victor Wembanyama took the mic to answer some of the journalists’ questions ahead of his second season.
As reported by Le Parisien, the French center seems very keen on what to expect from this season. “I’ve often heard from players that the first year is the hardest, but it’s clear that we’re going to have to do a lot of mental work to acquire a new status in this League, to win more and claim the Playoffs. It’s a culture that needs to be developed. We’ll be more focused on winning this year”, he expressed.
Putting the team’s goal on “the Play-Ins, or the Playoffs”, he also said he wanted to make a higher step in leadership. “It’s clearly one of the objectives that I discussed with the coach: I will no longer have a 2nd or 3rd chance in each match. I will have to be a leader by example”, he added.
“Of course, I want to be an All-Star, but that’s going to come if I make my teammates better. If I do that, I shouldn’t be too far behind in the individual trophy race”, Victoe Wembanyama commented when asked if he desires to win another individual award, naming even the MVP.
He also touched on the Olympics in Paris. “It’s the most intense sporting experience of my career so far. There are only six matches. It’s very difficult to win one but very easy to lose one. I discovered things that will be useful to me throughout my career”, he commented before touching on things he improved on.
“The more you advance in your career, the more you realize how important it is to work on the fundamentals. I’ve worked a lot on finishing. It might be natural to other players, like guards. But it’s stuff I really need to put an emphasis on mentally and physically”, Wemby also shared.
Victor Wembanyama also shared his opinion on Chris Paul being brought to the team during the summer. “[I’ve watched him] a lot, of course. He’s a great player. I actually remember from watching as a kid and I’m really excited. We all know he fits with us, and he’s doing his best to fill with us and teach us from day one”, he said about the playmaking living legend.
