Luka Doncic suffering an injury fell well shy of slowing down the Dallas Mavericks in the quest for the second NBA championship in franchise history.

Doncic, 25, picked up a left calf contusion during a workout to start the 2024 NBA Preseason. He will be reevaluated after one week.

Following the setback, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd was optimistic about the Slovenian combo guard avoiding a serious injury. In an interview with DLLS Sports, he also shared his excitement about the roster depth, heading to the 2024-25 Regular Season.

“I think it is a great problem to have,” he referred to the arrival of Klay Thompson boosting the squad and several players seeking a rotation spot.

“This is the deepest team that he has been a part of,” he continued focusing on the leader Doncic.

“He has a lot of different weapons. We can lighten the load with him not having to do everything. And that is going to be new for him, too, because he has always felt that he had to do everything,” added Kidd, “When you talk about our leader, Luka, it starts with him. And he is up for this challenge.”

About the injury, Doncic is projected to miss the Preseason opener opposite the Memphis Grizzlies in American Airlines Center on Monday.

Additional players being placed on the injury list include German Maxi Kleber. Kleber and Kessler Edwards are dealing with an ankle sprain and were ruled out for practice on Wednesday.
