NBA regulations regarding eligibility for season awards remove Luka Doncic from the MVP race

During the most recent stint on the injury list of the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic has been confirmed as ineligible for the season awards of the NBA.

This was expected since projections on the recovery timeline after sustaining a left calf strain in late December. However, Doncic missing a 17th game in the 2024-25 NBA Regular Season officially marked the latest disappointing development and controversy surrounding the NBA regulations for players to remain in the running for season awards, such as the Most Valuable Player distinction.

“I think that’s just part of the nature right now with the way the rules are set up,” commented Mavs head coach Jason Kidd, per The Dallas Morning News, “When you have a severe injury, it can knock you out of that, but we know that he’s one of the best players. He’s always mentioned as an MVP candidate.”

Through the ongoing spell of the Slovenian superstar on the sidelines, the team guided by Kidd went from 19-11 to 22-16.

“Our thinking is hopefully he gets healthy sooner than later and we can get him back on the floor,” Kidd stayed shy of updating the status of Doncic.

The Texas franchise is en route to two straight meetings with the Denver Nuggets in the American Airlines Center on the next edition of NBA Sundays and Tuesday. Fellow European superstar dominating the league, Serbian Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets will be looking to build on his latest MVP bid in Dallas.
