Tiago Splitter, a former NBA champion and currently the head coach of EuroLeague club Paris Basketball, touched on the comments that NBA comisssioner Adam Silver made about “being a fan” of 10-minute quarters in international basketball.

“Honestly, I think if you have 10 minute-quarters, every minute matters more,” Splitter said on how different a game of 40 minutes would be compared to a 48-minute match, after his team’s 91 – 82 EuroLeague win over fellow French side ASVEL Villeurbannne. “You can play with more intensity. You can play every possession even harder. But there’s a problem with that. In the NBA, there’s a lot of numbers and records. It’s like when you introduced the 3-point line. You change a lot of the numbers and the stats.”

Splitter has a rich experience from both the NBA and the EuroLeague as a player, performing in big games of both 48-minute and 40-minute durations throughout his career. The Brazilian coach made 420 appearances in the NBA from 2010 to 2017, becoming a champion with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.

Before his NBA move, Splitter registered 137 EuroLeague games and 254 Spanish ACB matches with Baskonia from 2003 to 2010. He was a three-time All-EuroLeague selection and widely recognized as one of the most elite centers in the competition during the 00s.

“But, hey, what do I know. They are the owners and chiefs over there so they should do whatever is best,” Splitter added.

Splitter took over Paris Basketball last summer for his first job as head coach this year after spells as an assistant in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets and the Houston Rockets. His team is considered the pleasant surprise of the 2024-25 EuroLeague, being currently in the top 4 in the standings during its maiden season in the competition.
