Dwyane Wade underwent surgery after being diagnosed with cancer a little over a year ago.

The three-time NBA champion with the Miami Heat revealed the challenges he is facing on his podcast, The WY Network, on Thursday.

“They were able to see my entire body, my entire inside, and they were able to see something that was on my kidney, on my right kidney,” he said on seeking a medical checkup because his father had battled prostate cancer.

The former NBA player had surgery on December 18, 2023. With the tumor indeed cancerous, he had 40% of his right kidney removed.

“My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” he described his reaction, “That moment was probably the weakest one I’ve ever felt in my life.”

Coming out of Marquette in 2003, Wade was selected with the fifth overall pick of the draft by the Heat. The initial stint with the Florida franchise lasted 13 years and was highlighted by championships in 2006, 2012, and 2023. In 2016, he signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bulls and in 2017 moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers to reunite with former teammate LeBron James. Returning to the Heat, he wrapped up his career with 72 appearances in the 2018-19 Regular Season.

Following his playing days, the Chicago native became a minority owner of the NBA’s Utah Jazz and the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.
