And what if the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers face each other in the Western Conference playoffs?

Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki admitted that he was stunned when he saw the news that the team is trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

“It’s just a tough position for me to be in,” Nowitzki said in an interview with 96.7 The Ticket. “I think I was as shocked and surprised as anyone was. I really couldn’t believe it.”

Doncic moved to the Mavericks from Real Madrid and the EuroLeague in 2018. He spent just one season with Nowitzki before the German big man retired in 2019 but that was enough for the two of them to form a strong bond.

When Doncic was about to make his debut with the Lakers he asked Nowitzki to attend the game.

“We texted a bit, of course I felt a little disappointed and sad for him, you know, I think he obviously didn’t see this coming,” Nowitzki said. “So he invited me to come out to his first game in L.A. and I felt like I had to support him.”

It’s not like Nowitzki will support any other NBA team other than his beloved Mavericks. But he’ll never stop routing for his friend Luka.

“At the end of the day, I’ll never be a Lakers fan, but I’ll always be a Luka fan,” Nowitzki added.
