According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, legendary coach Gregg Popovich is not expected to return to the San Antonio Spurs‘ bench this season.
His NBA future remains uncertain as he continues to recover from a stroke suffered in November.
Popovich and Wembanyama have reportedly stayed in close contact over the past few days, with the winningest coach in NBA history being hands-on in providing guidance following the French player’s diagnosis.
After Popovich suffered what was initially called a “mild stroke,” the Spurs moved assistant coach Mitch Johnson into the head-coaching role on an interim basis, and he has posted a 21-27 record.
Popovich, who has coached the Spurs since the 1996-97 season, turned 76 in January. In 2020, he surpassed the previous record held by Hubie Brown, who was 71 when he coached his final game with the Memphis Grizzlies.
