Pau Gasol and the San Antonio Spurs are “working to finalize a new deal” as Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
The 37-year-old Spanish center declined the 16.2 million 2017-2018 option in the contract he had signed with the Spurs last summer and become a free agent. His decision had to do both with negotiating a potentially longer deal and provide the club some extra salary cap space to potentially sign some big names.
A two-time NBA champion (2009, 2010) with the LA Lakers, Gasol scored 12.4 points and grabbed 7.8 rebounds in the previous season. He has averaged 17.9 points and 9.4 rebounds over 16 years of NBA career.
