Ben Simmons was worth the wait for the Philadelphia 76ers. Even though he did not play a single minute in the 2016-2017 due to injury this year to start the season, he has been more than just an impressive rookie.
In just his first year as a pro in the NBA and only 15 games into the season, Ben Simmons is already considered a possible heir to LeBron James’ playing legacy. Sixers fans had to be patient with him and Joel Embiid and so far, they have not disappointed as they are becoming one of the best dynamic duos in the process. The 21-year old point-forward can pretty much do everything on the offensive side of the court, and if and when he develops a jump-shot he will be a tough assignment for defenses.
The 21-year old Australian is averaging 18.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game while shooting an efficient 52.1% from the field. With these type of numbers, Simmons puts his name next to the three stars who could average a triple-double for a season in their career. He has the gift of seeing, feeling, distributing and passing the ball with his high basketball IQ. Simmons, can see over the defense with his height (2.08m / 6’10’’) and find open guys but also help his teammates with his rhythm to get it going. It is important to note that 69% of the time he is on the court he plays the point guard position. Moreover, in the entire NBA, he is the second fastest player with the basketball on his hands behind Steph Curry showing his tenacity, aggressiveness, and speed to run down the court in transition.
What is scary about him is not just that he is only 21 years old but also that he does not have a jumper just yet. Ben Simmons does not attempt three-pointers (96.8% of his shots are 2-PT FGAs) as he knows it is his weakness, but once he gets in the lane, he is unstoppable. Shooting with either hand in the lane, running the floor in transition he becomes a real problem for the defenses. Inside 3.04 meters (0-10ft) he is shooting a 56.7% showing how important it is for him to get in the lane. Furthermore, his first step is so quick, it reminds you of a Russell Westbrook or a John Wall while he also handles the ball like a point-guard at 2.08m (6’10’’).
Ben Simmons is not just good statistically, but what he does for his teammates is also special. Robert Covington and JJ Redick are better with him on the court. The Philadelphia 76ers have started off this season on the right foot as they are fifth in the Eastern Conference with an 8-7 record. A couple of days ago (18/11) the team challenged the defending champions Golden State Warriors but fell short leading at some point by 22 points. Simmons finished the game with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and a career-high 12 assists.
At this point is obvious that he has the complete package and in just 15 games this season he has established himself as a star in the making and the absolute favorite for the Rookie of the Year award.
