The Toronto Raptors have fired head coach Dwane Casey after the Cleveland Cavaliers swept the Canadian team and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Raptors had a great regular season run, finishing first in the Eastern Conference with 59-23 record, and Dwane Casey was voted coach of the year by the National Basketball Coaches Association. Casey had been the head coach of the Raptors for the past seven years and had a 323-238 (.576 win pct) record during the regular season, but just a 21-30 record (.412) in the playoffs.
General Manager Masai Ujiri said the following about Dwane Casey and the decision made by the Raptors: “After careful consideration, I have decided this is a very difficult but necessary step the franchise must take. As a team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next level,” Masai Ujiri stated. “We celebrate everything Dwane has done for the organization, we thank him, and we wish him nothing but the best in future. He was instrumental in creating the identity and culture of who we are as a team, and we are so proud of that.”
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Mike Budenhozler is expected to get a close inspection for the Raptors head coach opening.
Raptors announce firing of Dwane Casey. A damn shame after such an incredible regular season. He won’t be out of work long if he chooses to jump back in.
