Nikola Jokic will have his 2018-2019 team option with the Denver Nuggets declined in order to become a restricted free agent, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.
This was quite much an expected move that will allow Jokic to sign a five-year $146.5M max contract with the Nuggets. If the Serbian center’s option for 2018-2019 was exercised, then he would become an unrestricted free agent after the completion of the following season and the Nuggets could easily lose him to another team.
By declining Jokic’s option and giving him a well-deserved, according to his performances, maximum deal, the Nuggets secure not only that the player stays with the team for a long time but that he’s also paid in a satisfactory manner.
Jokic, 23, comes off the most productive season of his NBA career so far. The Serbian big notched 18.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.1 assists in an average of 36 minutes over 75 games with the Nuggets.
Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic will have his team option declined for next season to become RFA, and sides plan to reach agreement on a five-year, $146.5M maximum contract, league sources told Yahoo.
