The Lakers were considered the favorite team to sign free agent James since not only they had created enough salary cap space to provide him with the max contract he wanted but also because they can potentially pair him with another superstar. Thus having a squad that can transform a struggling (35-47 in 2017-2018) Lakers team to a contender again.
This superstar might very well be Kawhi Leonard who “wants to become a Laker”, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
James, 33, leaves the Cleveland Cavaliers after four seasons, following his return from the Miami Heat in 2014. He says farewell to the Cavs after leading them to the first championship title in the history of the franchise, the near-historic comeback from 3-1 to 3-4 in the 2016 Finals against the Golden State Warriors.
