The Dallas Mavericks have moved to legally protect Luka Doncic’s ‘The Matador’ and ‘El Matador’ nicknames by filing trademarks on them to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The Mavs are also claiming the ownership of the nickname and Doncic won’t own it if he leaves the club. However, in order to register this trademark, the Mavs need Doncic’s written permission since it’s his nickname. Their application didn’t include it.
Doncic got the nickname from the Mavs development coach Mike Procopio.

The problem for Doncic is the MAVS are claiming ownership of the name.
If Doncic leaves the Mavs he will not own his nickname.
He needs a better trademark lawyer. pic.twitter.com/QXmOR22Lnn
