2018 Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons said that Dallas Mavericks point forward Luka Doncic should be the one who succeeds him.
“Luka,” Simmons answered when after a question on who he would choose for ROY if he’d get to vote, per Keith Pompey of the Philly Inquirer. The Philadelphia 76ers guard/forward was then asked to justify his choice.
“Why? What do you mean why? He’s playing better. His team is winning more games. Trae Young is killer. But overall I think Luka’s team is playing a little better. And he’s doing a little bit more,” Simmons elaborated.
Simmons is actually one of the few NBAers who has voiced their preference for Luka Doncic in the ROY debate between the Slovenian player and the other frontrunner for the award: Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.
L.A. Clippers forward Blake Griffin, Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell and L.A. Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma recently said that Young should be ROY, in a sequence of tweets and retweets.
Doncic is averaging 21.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists over 32. minutes.
