Igor Kokoskov, the first European-born NBA head coach, was fired by Phoenix Suns on Monday after just a single season in Phoenix, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Suns went a Western Conference-worst 19-63 under Kokoskov’s guidance.
“After extensive evaluation, I determined it is best to move in a different direction with our head coaching position,” Suns general manager James Jones said in a news release, as Wojnarowski pointed out. “I want to thank Igor for his work this past season and wish him the best with his future endeavors.”
Still, Suns had planned to bring the Serbian coach back for a second season, especially after the team’s stronger play in late stages of the season, however the team chose to move forward without him.
