Nowitzki starts process to become U.S. citizen

Dirk Nowitzki is enjoying retirement, but has the U.S. citizenship in his agenda as well. Per Dallas Morning News, the 40-year-old German and his wife applied for their green cards, which will lead them to the U.S. citizenship, step needed for their U.S. passports.

He was with the Dallas Mavericks for a record-breaking 21 seasons, but never before touched on the long process of obtaining the U.S. citizenship. Key word here is long, because it can take about five years to complete the task in hand.

“We’re in the process of getting a green card” he said to Dallas Morning News about him and his wife Jessica and added: “So once we accomplish that, then you have to be a green-card holder for, I think, over five years before you can even think about doing that. So we’re going to do that and see how it goes. But obviously our kids were born here and they all have U.S. passports and the wifey and I have been on a visa for the last few years. So hopefully that’s going to be accomplished soon.”
