Hong Kong anti-government protesters were burning Lebron James jerseys and trampling on them following the comments made by the Los Angeles Lakers superstar on Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey’s now-deleted tweet in support of the protests.
These actions by the protesters came after James talked about Morey, saying that: “Yes, we do have freedom of speech,” James said. “But at times there are ramifications for the negative that can happen when you’re not thinking about others when you only think about yourself.”
“So many people could have been harmed, not only financially but physically, emotionally, spiritually. So just be careful what we tweet and what we say and what we do. Even though yes, we do have freedom of speech, it can be a lot of negative that comes with it,” Lebron added.
James, who was heavily criticized by media and fans for his reaction, took it on twitter to explain that, “I do not believe there was any consideration for the consequences and ramifications of the tweet. I’m not discussing the substance. Others can talk about that.”
Protesters in Hong Kong, wearing jerseys of other NBA players like Steph Curry or Russell Westbrook, were also holding pictures of the famous “Crying Lebron” meme image, plus collages of James pointing at Chinese Yuan bills. They were also expressing their support towards Morey.
“Hong Kong people are really suffering right now. We are very angry about that,” protestor James Lo said.
Some were also taking shots at a backboard with Lebron’s face on it.
