An era for the Spurs has officially ended with the retirement of Tony Parker’s jersey, and coach Popovich, who has been with the Spurs since 1988, will be the next one to close the door.
While Popovich signed last Spring a three-year contract extension, he is also free to decide his own future season by season, in accordance with the Spurs management.
Popovich never spoke directly about an imminent retirement, but last night for the first time, he hinted that this time might come soon.
According to Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News, coach Popovich made the following statement: “It’s always different coming onto a court when the star (Dirk) that was basically the backbone of the franchise is gone. It sort of gives you pause and makes you understand how fortunate you are to still be there, I guess. Pretty soon I won’t be.”
Popovich will turn 71-years old in January and he is also the coach of the USA national team.
