Following the latest developments with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Draw for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tournaments, which was set to take place at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland on March 20, is postponed. A later date is yet to be confirmed, as FIBA informs.
Amid coronavirus pandemic, the IOC is also set to hold a teleconference in order to discuss the impact of the latest developments in regards to Tokyo’s Olympics on Tuesday.
The postponement of the draw brings many questions are coming into sight, with the NBA looking into possibly extending its 2019-20 season in the summer months, and the qualifying tournaments yet to be played.
The uncertainty of whether the Olympic Games can take place is widely spreading. A few days prior, Spanish NT head coach Sergio Scariolo crossed out the possibility of the Games to occur. At the same time, UEFA’s Euro 2020 is also on hold, with the Union’s Board deciding via a teleconference whether or not the tournament will be held on a later date, in 2021.
The IOC that is also holding a teleconference on Tuesday will discuss the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, while it has clearly ruled out the option of Games being held behind closed doors.
