USA Basketball is in the process of planing a pre-Olympic bubble in Las Vegas with Australia and Spain in order to train and play exhibition games against each another before leaving for Tokyo, managing director Jerry Colangelo told ESPN.
The NBA players are expected to be an important part of all three teams’ rosters and a bubble would limit travel and possible exposure to COVID-19 before going to Japan.
USA Basketball has also petitioned the U.S. Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Committee and FIBA to change the rules regarding the final cut on the rosters.
Usually, it is set several weeks in advance but with the NBA playoffs ending just three days before the start of the Olympics, Team USA is trying to push for a later deadline or even an option to add players throughout the tournament.
