Micheal Eric announced that he won’t join Nigeria in the 2021 Olympic Games, via his social media channels. The 33-year-old center said that he went through a “traumatic” experience with COVID-19 during which he exhibited aggressive symptoms that affected his physical shape.

“I tesed positive for COVID-19 and experienced very aggressive symptoms to the extent I was advised not to try any physical activity during my isolation period,” Eric wrote. “Part of this isolation happened to coincide with the first week of the national team’s training camp. With multiple negative tests, I wanted to be part of the camp, even though my body was in no physical shape to compete. Ultimately, despite my all-out efforts to recover, it wasn’t possible for me to get ready in time to meet the demands of representing Nigeria in the Olympics at the level that the national team deserves.”

Eric just finished the season in Russia with CSKA Moscow, winning the VTB League. He also participated in the EuroLeague Final Four for the first time in his career.
