Spain head coach Sergio Scariolo hinted towards Juancho Hernangomez returning to action in time for the Olympic Games in his latest update regarding the 25-year-old forward.
“He is progressing well. The cooperation with the Timberwolves has been great,” he mentioned, relays Mundo Deportivo, “I am optimistic because all the tests have been positive.”
Hernangomez suffered a left shoulder injury in a recent prep game versus France. He was initially ruled out of the Olympic Games. However, he traveled with the national team to the USA and met with the Minnesota Timberwolves medical staff.
Spain will face off with Team USA tonight, Sunday. Following the exhibition game in Las Vegas and after the final squad is confirmed, the national team will travel to Tokyo.
Despite the progress in his recovery, it remains to be seen if the Timberwolves player will be cleared to play for Spain in the Olympics.
Spain is part of Group C in the preliminary round of the Olympic tournament. The opener is against host Japan next Monday, while Argentina follows on Thursday and Slovenia next Sunday. The top two teams will advance to the quarterfinals plus the two best third-placed teams of the three groups.
