Forced to miss last year’s World Cup, where his countrymen surprised everybody, Janis Strelnieks showed amazing shape and led the team in scoring with 14 points over a perfect 3/3 from beyond the arc. Arturs Strautins followed him with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
On the losing side, Omar El-Sheikh’s 15 points weren’t sufficient to pull a crazy upset against Latvia at their place.
Elite basketball is coming to Riga from July 2-7, where Latvia will host one of this year’s four 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, facing Georgia and the Philippines in Group A; in Group B, Montenegro, Cameroon, and Brazil will complete the picture.
Egypt, instead, is set to participate in the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Piraeus, facing the Greek hosts and the Dominican Republic in Group B; Slovenia, New Zealand, and Croatia will be the other participants in Group A.
