In a dominating showing, the United States knocked out Nigeria, 88-74, in Paris’ Accor Arena and progressed to the Semifinals of the 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday. In her third double-double of the tournament, A’ja Wilson combined 20 points with 11 rebounds. Jackie Young ended up with 15 points, Breanna Stewart registered 13 points, and Brittney Griner added 11 points. For Nigeria, Promise Amukamara scored 19 points.
Australia is the next opponent for Team USA. The Opals made short work of Serbia, 85-67, behind impressive shooting, especially in the first half. Alanna Smith posted a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double alongside four assists. Jade Melbourne and Cayla George followed with 18 points apiece. On the losing end, Jovana Nogic registered a team-high 17 points.
European countries dominated the opposite side of the bracket with Belgium and France setting up a collision in the Semifinals. The reigning EuroBasket champions took down Spain, 79-66. Paving the way for the first appearance in the Semifinals, Emma Meesseman and Kyara Linskens shared a team-high 19 points. Megan Gustafson had 21 points for Spain.
Marine Johannes set a new individual best at the international level with 24 points for host France in a win, 84-71, versus Germany. Gabby Williams chipped in 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and two steals. For the team coached by Lisa Thomaidis, Nyara Sabally tallied 20 points.
Following the Semifinals on Friday, the gold and bronze medal games conclude the tournament on Sunday.
