German basketball is living one of the best moments in history. Not only the 5×5 men’s national team has found success recently and the women’s team has followed by gaining more and more experience, but also the 3×3 women’s national team won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
Next to her teammates Svenja Brunckhorst, Elisa Mevius, and Marie Reichert, Sonja Greinacher was among the winners after a long and tiring trajectory that brought them all the way to beat Spain. In the final, she contributed with five points to his country’s golden victory.
The 32-year-old gold medalist, however, did the impossible by reaching this achievement while having a broken hand. She revealed it with a post on her Instagram profile, showing X-rays.
“Three weeks before our first Olympic game, I broke my hand in a preparation game in France. While qualifying for the Olympics was always my biggest dream as an athlete, the second challenge was to actually make it there without getting injured”, Sonja Greinacher first shared.
Finally, she could celebrate in the French capital. “My heart goes out to all the amazing athletes who got injured right before or during the Olympics, as this is an athlete’s worst nightmare… Luckily, I had an amazing support system and team to help me these last couple of weeks”, she followed.
