Joel Embiid, star center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has been awarded the Medal of Commander of the Order of Valor by his native Cameroon in recognition of his Olympic gold medal achievement with Team USA, reports TMZ.
The award, presented by Cameroonian President Paul Biya, celebrates Embiid’s “exceptional contributions” in various fields, including the arts, science, agriculture, and commerce.
Embiid, who spent his early years in Cameroon before moving to the United States at 16 to pursue his basketball dreams, had multiple national teams vying for his talent. He ultimately chose to represent Team USA in international competition, securing a gold medal in the process.
Despite his commitment to Team USA, Embiid has hinted at the possibility of representing Cameroon in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, leaving the door open for a future return to his roots on the world stage.
