The Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving reaffirmed his intention to represent Australia in future international tournaments.
Coming out of his ninth appearance in the NBA All-Star Game, the 32-year-old combo guard talked about the required process for him to switch from being eligible for Team USA to playing for the Boomers.
“We are in the process of that right now, just trying to figure out the best route for me to be eligible,” he commented during a media session, following a contribution of 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals for Shaq’s OGs in winning the All-Star mini-tournament.
“There’s a lot of paperwork involved. Obviously, USA still has a decision to make, but for me, I’m just trying to do what’s best,” he added, “Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career and play for the Australian team, that would be great.”
Melbourne-born Irving previously opted in favor of representing the United States in major FIBA tournaments. At the senior level, his international career went from being named Most Valuable Player and winning gold in the 2014 FIBA World Cup to another gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games. However, he was left out of the lineup for the 2020 and 2024 Olympics.
Meanwhile, the senior national team of Australia will be looking to qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar and then contend for a spot in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, after this summer’s FIBA Asia Cup in Saudi Arabia.
