WNBA all-time leading scorer Diana Taurasi announced her retirement from basketball at 42 in an interview with TIME.
“Mentally and physically, I’m just full. That’s probably the best way I can describe it. I’m full and I’m happy,” Taurasi said.
Taurasi puts an end to a career of 20 years after winning everything there is to win as a player. She’s a three-time WNBA champion (2007, 2009, 2014) with Phoenix Mercuery, a six-time Olympic Games gold medalist (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2021, 2024) and three-time World champion (2010, 2014, 2018) among several other distinctions. In the Paris Olympics, she became the first basketball player with six gold medals in the competition.
During her stints in Europe, Taurasi won the EuroLeague Women title in 2007 through 2010, in 2013 and 2016 as a player of Spartak Moscow, Dynamo Moscow and UMMC Ekaterinburg. She became a Turkish League champion in 2011 with Fenerbahce and Turkish Cup champion in 2012 with Galatasaray.
When it comes to individual distinctions, Taurasi won WNBA MVP in 2009, Finals MVP in 2009 and 2014 while being the league’s leading scorer in 2006 and from 2008 to 2011. She was a 10-time (2004, 2006–2011, 2013, 2014, 2018) All-WNBA First Team member.
