FIBA announced that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will feature some changes to the competition format for the basketball program.
So far, the 12 teams were split into two groups of six but this time around it will be three groups of four. The group phase will be played in round robin format and the top two teams from each group will advance along with the two best third-placed teams. Teams from the same group can’t be drawn against each other in the quarterfinals which will be played in a knockout format as well as all the games until the end.
Also, the 3×3 Basketball will make its debut. Eight teams will be in one single pool and play all other teams over the course of four days. Teams ranked seventh and eighth in the pool will take no further part in the competition.
The teams placed first and second qualify directly for the semifinals, while those that finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth meet in two qualifying quarterfinals. After this change, the players will have two games less in their schedule and also the teams will have two days of rest between their group stage game and one game in the final phase. Also under the new system, every game counts for everyone and contrary to the past, losing can’t be rewarded with an easier path to the medal round.
