Berlin got a clean and comfortable win in Game 2 of BBL finals against Bayern, tied the series (1-1) and goes to Munich for the break that will turn things upside down. Sven Schultze, a great leader and the soul of this team both on and off the court, talked to Eurohoops about the chances of Alba to achieve something that no one expected at the beginning of the season,: win the championship.

Moreover, he sends his message for a break in Munich, he emphasizes that defense gives championships and talk about the possibility of ending his career by winning the championship title.

– You have the best defense in the league, but I do not think that what we see is just defense…

“We made our open shots that we didn’t score in Munich. We also had open shots in Munich, but we couldn’t control Bayern there. This time we had more control over Bayern. They didn’t manage to run and impose their tempo. That was our plan and our defense”.

– You were really good in all the games against Munich this season except the first final. It seems like you have the way to make their lives more difficult and beat them…

“We had a good start in Munich, but then lost our rhythm and we were not focused any more. Bayern has a lot of players who are experienced and can beat you if you don’t control the tempo. In Game 2 we were better and more confident. Of course, defense is the part of the game that gives us more confidence, because if you don’t score, you can still play defense and as famous coaches say defenses are those which give the championships”.

– But you still not have the home advantage and need a break in order to get the title. Can you play the same way in Munich?

“Yes, I think we can do it as long as we make the open shots. Then we will have our chance in Munich. In the end of Game 1, we ran and mounted a come back. If we have scored some shots, we could become even more dangerous. Of course we’re going there to steal the victory. We can do it”.

– Despite the age you’re always ready for 10-12 quality minutes and there’s a lot of energy to your game. Experience plays also an important part…

“Yes, this is also important. I think my teammates keep me young, we have many young players in our team who are competitive. In addition, you know that was the way I always played in my career, taking much energy for my team”.

– You have played in many finals and you know the way to the championship…

“Yes of course, but it’s not only me. The whole team is focused on what we do and we all contribute to success. I try to be the leader and a good example. Hopefully everyone follows”.

– Perhaps someone could recognize it in the way you play and some details during the game. Some of your reactions, how you make a foul and how tough you can be in the game by sending messages…

“We are in play offs and we play in the finals. I really want to win the championship. Four years ago we played again in the finals and did not manage to win it. Some children from Bayern were with me and they also want the same now. It’s who wants it more and I think we want more this title”.

– I don’t want to say something about your age, but do you think that a championship is the best way for an athlete to put an end in his career?

“Yes, yes I understand what you mean (laughs). I’ve thought about it and I think the best way to close a career is to take the championship, but I am still too young to retire. I am healthy, I love this sport, I love being with these amazing guys. I do not know. We’ll see… we’ll see”.
