NCAA charges Louisville, Rick Pitino with violations

For infractions transpired under former head coach, Rick Pitino, the NCAA sent a Level I Notice of Violations to Louisville. There are three additional Level II violations, one of which towards Pitino himself. Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports originally reported the latest investigation on Louisville and Pitino.

The case is based on allegations for an improper recruiting offer to Brian Bowen in 2017. Former assistant coach Kenny Johnson is accused of paying Bowen’s father, $1,300, to secure his commitment. Assistant Jordan Fair is accused of paying $900 to another recruit.

Pitino, who in theory remains the head coach of the Greek national team ahead of the Olympic Qualifying tournaments, was cited for failing to “promote an environment of compliance”. The member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame responded disagreeing, Adam Zagoria relays.

“Today the NCAA released an NOA and alleges a Level II violation against me,” he confirmed, “I firmly disagree with this allegation and will follow the protocols in addressing this allegation through the administrative process. Due to the NCAA bylaws on public disclosure on enforcement issues, I will have no further comment on this matter until it is resolved.”

Pitino was recently hired by Iona. He returned to the NCAA following his second European stint with Panathinaikos OPAP.

“We are aware of the report,” Iona notes in its statement, “The NCAA has a process to address the allegations. Prior to hiring Coach Pitino, we conducted extensive due diligence. We support Coach Pitino and expect him to respond within the process.”

The Level I violation is considered the most serious. In this case, it involves a repeat offender in Louisville, which is expected to increase the school’s punishment. As for Pitino, he will face a suspension and have limitations placed on his recruiting.

The Cardinals fired Pitino in 2017 as a result of the FBI investigation into college basketball corruption that included Louisville. The scandal also prevented Bowen from playing for Louisville despite committing to the Cardinals.
