The former player of Greece’s national team with plenty of distinctions on both the international and club levels, Sofoklis Schortsanitis was back on a basketball court over the weekend.
Schortsanitis, 37, checked in late in the first quarter accompanied by the cheering of attending fans. Besides being limited to a one-point showing in a losing effort, it was certainly a pleasant experience for Baby Shaq.
Back in March, he committed to play in the local league aiming to help Ionio Corfu achieve promotion to the fourth-tier division of Greece.
Concluding his professional career in late 2020, Big Sofo was coming off a spell with Ionikos Affidea producing four games played in the 2019-20 edition of Basket League, the top-flight division of Greece.
Making his way to 197 games in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, including the 2014 championship run as a leading member of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, and representing Greece across multiple major international competitions, including the famous win against Team USA in the semifinals leading to the silver medal in the 2006 World Championship, pop out of his long list of achievements. In addition, he won numerous domestic titles between Maccabi, Olympiacos, and Panathinaikos, and also went through stints at Crvena Zvezda, Trikala, PAOK, Cantu, Aris, and Iraklis.
In 2003, he was selected with the 34th overall pick of the NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers with his rights later traded to the Atlanta Hawks and Oklahoma City Thunder. However, he never actually played in the NBA.
