Maccabi’s huge third-quarter run leads to win in Jerusalem

Twenty unanswered points in the third quarter separated Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv from Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem, leading to a win in Pais Arena on Friday.

The team guided by Oded Kattash ended up with a 90-85 victory, jumping to 9-3 in Israel’s Ligat Winner Regular Season.

Former Oregon standout Roman Sorkin registered a team-high 20 points in the Round 4 contest. Besides 9/13 from the field, he threw in five rebounds, three blocks, and two assists.

Five more double-digit scoring contributions, Josh Nebo pairing 12 points with nine rebounds, Tamir Blatt combining 11 points with eight assists, Bonzie Colson packing 11 points, and Jasiel Rivero and Lorenzo Brown with ten points apiece.

The reigning champions of Israel rank second in the domestic league standings, trailing Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv by 1.5 games. The leaders are playing against Hapoel Holon tomorrow in a Round 19 fixture. The Yellows return to action opposite Hapoel Nofar Galil Elion in a home fixture of Round 3 on Sunday.

Sitting fifth in the table, the team coached by Ilias Kantzouris dropped to 8-6. Levi Randolph producing a game-high 33 points with 9/12 from the field, including 4/9 triples did not prevent the first home loss of the 2023-24 campaign.

Following the international break and two more home games at the domestic level, resuming the Basketball Champions League campaign sets up a visit at Lenovo Tenerife on March 6. At 3-0, the Jerusalem outfit leads Group K of the Round of 16.
