Leaving Turkey for Poland may not seem ideal, but coach Selcuk Ernak and Anwil Wloclawek are a great match so far, and they have had an impressive start to the season.
The former three-time champions in their local league, who reached 20 years ago the semifinal of the Saporta Cup, are leading the Polish league with a 6-0 record after beating on their road last Friday Trefl Sopot.
The final score was impressive (108-93) despite missing two key players, Luke Nelson and Nick Ongenda. Michal Michalak scored 29 points, and DJ Funderbuk added 21 for the winning side, while Jakub Schenk had 29 for the hosts.
However, the night belonged to Anwil, who is also competing in the FIBA Europe Cup, against the defending champions who are competing in the BKT EuroCup and dropped to 5-1 in their local league.
It’s too early in the season of course and there’s a long way to go, but it seems that a coach who last year started the season in Turk Telekom and has a long experience at the high European level, can make a difference.
