Donatas Motiejunas produced 28 points and nine rebounds in his best game with the AS Monaco jersey to lead his team to an 84 – 82 win over ASVEL Villeurbanne in a French League clash of the giants.
Paris Lee was the one to score the game-winning layup for Monaco with 40 seconds to play. Chris Jones missed a 3-point attempt and Elie Okobo also misfired from beyond the arc at the buzzer for ASVEL in a scene similar to the EuroLeague game between the two sides. Only this time, the outcome was in Monaco’s favor.
Monaco had taken a 71 – 61 lead behind Motiejunas’ fiery performance but ASVEL came back and went up 75 – 76 after free throws by Okobo. The game remained dramatic until the final moments.
Apart from Motiejunas (8-12 2-pointers, 2-3 triples), Rob Gray scored 13, Alpha Diallo added 12 points while Lee had 10 points along with six assists. Jones (14 points), Okobo (13 points, 0-5 3-pointers) and Kostas Antetokounmpo (12 points) led ASVEL in scoring.
Thanks to this win, second-placed Monaco climbed to 8-2. ASVEL dropped to 7-4 and in fourth place in the standings.
