The Christmas day of 2023 proved to be a nightmare for BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque, as Sportica, the arena of the club, was destroyed by fire.
According to local authorities a total of 47 vehicles were engaged in trying to contain the disaster, which fortunately didn’t have any human casualties.
The fire is presumed to have started due to a technical malfunction per various local reports. However the point is that the team suddenly doesn’t have an arena anymore and probably will have to relocate in order to continue their season.
Of course, the financial set back is also huge for the club.
While no official announcement has been made, the upcoming game against Paris Basketball, scheduled for Thursday in Betclic Elite, the French top division, was postponed, according to information from the daily newspaper “Le Parisien”.
Currently BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque is 17th in the league standings, just one spot over the bottom, and the danger of relegation after this incident seems greater than ever.
