Sertac Komsuoglu, Fenerbahce’s Board Member who is responsible for the basketball department of the club, issued a statement after his team’s loss to Anadolu Efes in Game 2 of the Turkish BSL League Finals.
Komsuoglu expressed his complaints about the level of officiating and the Federation’s selection of referees. As he said that if the situation continues like that, the club would rather focus its attention on EuroLeague instead of BSL. Here’s a part of the statement:
“Our players were victimized here today. The things that called against our players were not called when the other side on the same occasions. After that, it came to this. I will also say this: For how many minutes did the game stop? 5-10 minutes. This is basketball. If you’re going to eject them, you don’t need to wait 10 minutes. There aren’t any movies being played here instead of games. We don’t watch movies on Netflix. For 10 minutes, we looked at what will happen, what is going on. I wish for the best. See you on Monday, but if it will continue like this, we’d rather invest in EuroLeague, Europe accordingly. As Tivibu, you can broadcast nice and entertaining matches among yourselves here.”
It’s unclear how this may translate to actions, however, a possible scenario would be for Fenerbahce to use a different roster on the BSL without the main rotation of the team, which will be focused only on EuroLeague games.
The point of the game that was the main point of friction happened with 3:27 left in the match and after a basket by Chris Singleton for the 80 – 71. Singleton was fouled by Melih Mahmutoglu who then threw the ball towards him. Singleton, four Fenerbahce players, and three Fenerbahce staff members were ejected.
While in the FIBA rule book, entering the court from the bench while there are physical alterations doesn’t equal automatic ejections like in the NBA, the Turkish league has adopted the NBA rule on this matter.
Anadolu Efes has a 2-0 lead in the finals and needs one more win to secure the championship title.
