Once upon a time, stats were not kept properly in the game of basketball and one could decide which player performed best according to the points they had scored. The world has changed a lot. A player can have an impact in many different ways, which can be seen thanks to various statistical evaluations.
However, for a team to win, the most important thing still is simply to produce points. Yet, there are different ways to create and produce. One can contribute to the team’s scoring through assists as well. And those assists can help you understand how many points a player helped produce for the team.
That’s exactly what Eurohoops did! We tried to find out which players had the biggest impact through assists and points, and analyzed accordingly all the games that have been played so far in the EuroLeague.
So, here we are: the most productive EuroLeague players! Before we get going, we must state that Nando De Colo and Jordan Theodore, both of whom were responsible for 29.1% of their teams’ points, didn’t make the list because of a tiebreaker.
10- SERGIO RODRIGUEZ (CSKA MOSCOW)
Points scored: 311 points
Team points through his assists: 238 points / 106 assists
Total: 549 points
Last summer, CSKA Moscow turned to another superstar to fill a huge gap, and Sergio Rodriguez has done so brilliantly. The offense of the Russian powerhouse is functioning like a machine and Rodriguez has pulled his weight and then some by involving everyone in the game as a first-class guard. He’s dished out 10 or more assists to five different players, but it has been De Colo and Kyle Hines who’ve benefited the most from this. The fact that he has set up De Colo 20 times especially shows how successful Rodriguez is. He’s been responsible for 29.2% of CSKA’s points.
9- PIERRE JACKSON (MACCABI FOX TEL AVIV)
Points scored: 319 points
Team points through his assists: 196 points / 90 assists
Total: 515 points
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv is fighting hard to make the playoffs and Pierre Jackson has been sitting in the director’s chair so far. Jackson has had a flying start to the second chapter of his EuroLeague career. He has formed a long-awaited guard duo along with Norris Cole. Already a skilled master at scoring his own points, Jackson has also dished out 54 assists for Maccabi’s frontcourt players and got them involved. Jackson is responsible for 30.0% of Maccabi’s points.
8- VASSILIS SPANOULIS (OLYMPIACOS PIRAEUS)
Points scored: 129 points
Team points through his assists: 129 points / 56 assists
Total: 258 points
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to watch him play for a long stretch in the beginning of this season, but we are lucky to have him back before it was too late. Vassilis Spanoulis is, without a doubt, the supreme leader of Olympiacos Piraeus and he proves it every single time. He scores and creates for his teammates, the biggest beneficiary being Georgios Printezis. Following his return to action, he has been responsible for 30.8% of Olympiacos’s points.
7- THOMAS HEURTEL (FC BARCELONA LASSA)
Points scored: 230 points
Team points through his assists: 310 points / 130 assists
Total: 540 points
Thomas Heurtel is one of the greatest passers of all time so it’s no surprise that he made this list. He’s the only player, along with Nick Calathes, to produce 300+ points through assists. He is a natural at creating for his big men, which has resulted in 85 assists to FC Barcelona Lassa’s frontcourt players. Heurtel has been responsible for 31.9% of Barcelona’s points.
6- KEVIN PANGOS (ZALGIRIS KAUNAS)
Points scored: 266 points
Team points through his assists: 299 points / 135 assists
Total: 565 points
He is Sarunas Jasikevicius’s floor general and this is a crystal-clear explanation as to why Kevin Pangos is playing the way ‘Saras’ used to. Pangos is an unbelievable shooter and yet he has evolved tremendously under Jasikevicius to become one of the most-productive players in the EuroLeague. Paulius Jankunas has scored 30% of his points from Pangos’s assists. Pangos has been responsible for 32.7% of Zalgiris’s points.
5- NEMANJA NEDOVIC (UNICAJA MALAGA)
Points scored: 268 points
Team points through his assists: 168 points / 78 assists
Total: 456 points
An injury prevented him from playing for his home country at EuroBasket 2017, but he still had a strong start to the season and is having a great one with Unicaja Malaga. James Augustine, Adam Waczynski and Ray MacCallum have scored 92 points thanks to his assists. Unicaja can still aim at playing in the second half of April and Nedovic has had a lot to do with that. He’s been responsible for 33.1% of Malaga’s points.
4- LUKA DONCIC (REAL MADRID)
Points scored: 366 points
Team points through his assists: 234 points / 96 assists
Total: 600 points
Once again, we stumble upon the 18-year-old wunderkid and it probably won’t be the last time. Real Madrid has suffered from some tough injuries and Luka Doncic had to step up and be the leader. He is performing as well as a great player would, fulfilling multiple tasks perfectly. He has been there whenever he was needed. The EuroLeague’s leader in performance index rating has been responsible for 33.7% of Madrid’s points. At the age of 18. Incredible.
3- TAYLOR ROCHESTIE (CRVENA ZVEZDA MTS BELGRADE)
Points scored: 295 points
Team points through his assists: 267 points / 110 assists
Total: 562 points
He was the league’s top scorer in his previous EuroLeague adventure and now his role has transformed into something different in Belgrade. Taylor Rochestie is one of the best creators for Crvena Zvezda’s great shooters and he prefers creating to scoring his own points, which he is more than good at. Zvezda has made 179 three-pointers this season and 50 of those came from Rochestie’s assists. Nemanja Dangubic, in particular, has a special connection with the American guard. Rochestie is responsible for 34.3% of Zvezda’s points.
