From strength to strength, Real Madrid retains the top position in the Power Rankings for the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, powered by Eurohoops. Los Blancos were first in Volumes 1 and 2, too. Since then, it has been more of the same with the distance from second place in the standings growing to two wins.
The intense competition below and the ties between multiple teams in the table add intrigue to their placement in the Power Rankings.
Status, momentum, form, and the importance of the results are the main criteria for ranking the 18 teams.
Also, the team’s respective rankings cannot increase or decrease by a margin larger than six spots from the previous edition of the Power Rankings.
#18 ALBA Berlin
Previous ranking: 18 (-)
W-L: 2-11
Home: 2-4
Away: 0-7
Points +/-: 76.7-86.6
ALBA’s second win finally came in Round 12 and that tells the whole story for ALBA Berlin. Missing players the likes of Sterling Brown, Louis Olinde, and Matt Thomas to injuries complicated matters. It is an uphill battle now.
#17 LDLC ASVEL VILLEURBANNE
Previous ranking: 17 (-)
W-L: 2-11
Home: 0-6
Away: 2-5
Points +/-: 80.2-89
Since Gianmarco Pozzecco took over head-coaching responsibilities, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne has shown a glimpse of improvement. However, its ranking is fair. It is the only team without a win at home. Even the brand-new LDLC Arena did not do the trick.
#16 CRVENA ZVEZDA MERIDIANBET BELGRADE
Previous ranking: 13 (-3)
W-L: 4-9
Home: 4-2
Away: 0-7
Points +/-: 82.2-81
Only one win in the last five outings and three wins over nine games with Greek tactician Giannis Sfairopoulos in charge. Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet is winless away from home, sharing a league-low 0-7 with ALBA Berlin and falling behind in the race in the Play-In Showdown.
#15 EA7 EMPORIO ARMANI MILAN
Previous ranking: 9 (-6)
W-L: 4-9
Home: 3-3
Away: 1-6
Points +/-: 78.9-78.6
One step forward and two steps back for EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. The latest stretch features three straight losses combined with an injury setback for Nikola Mirotic. After visiting FC Barcelona in Round 14, six of the next seven games are at home. Will they be enough?
#14 ZALGIRIS KAUNAS
Previous ranking: 8 (-6)
W-L: 5-8
Home: 2-3
Away: 3-5
Points +/-: 78.6-80.3
Ups and downs for Zalgiris, including a loss to lowly ALBA Berlin. the injury issues have been piling up with Brady Manek, Arnas Butkevicius, and Lukas Lekavicius all being forced to the sidelines adds to the current issues.
#13 FC BAYERN MUNICH
Previous ranking: 16 (+3)
W-L: 6-7
Home: 4-1
Away: 2-6
Points +/-: 79.2-80.8
BMW Park strengthens FC Bayern Munich, countering its struggles away from home. Among the teams with the most road challenges so far, after the upcoming visit to Real Madrid, home games will soon dominate the schedule. Andreas Obst and Leandro Bolmaro’s return to action helps as well. Captain Vladimir Lucic is nearing his season debut.
#12 PANATHINAIKOS AKTOR ATHENS
Previous ranking: 14 (+2)
W-L: 6-7
Home: 5-3
Away: 1-4
Points +/-: 81.4-80.5
From four wins in a row and a 6-4 record to three straight losses. Panathinaikos lacks consistency, which has damaged its position in the standings. Juancho Hernangomez’s return should provide more options, but Ioannis Papapetrou is expected to miss several more weeks.
#11 VALENCIA BASKET
Previous ranking: 10 (-1)
W-L: 7-6
Home: 5-2
Away: 2-4
Points +/-: 75.1-75.5
A five-game losing streak concerned Valencia, but a perfect two-game week pushed away the worries. Far from sitting third in the standings as in Round 3 or the top six as in Round 8, but much better than ranking 13th in Round 11.
#10 FENERBAHCE BEKO ISTANBUL
Previous ranking: 4 (-6)
W-L: 6-7
Home: 5-0
Away: 1-7
Points +/-: 80.8-81.8
Digging its way out of a 14-point hole in the fourth quarter, Fenerbahce prevailed in overtime and emerged as the first team to defeat Real Madrid. However, traveling to Spain simply added to its struggles in road games. Giorgos Papagiannis picking up an injury is the most recent setback.
#9 BASKONIA VITORIA-GASTEIZ
Previous ranking: 15 (+6)
W-L: 8-5
Home: 4-4
Away: 4-1
Points +/-: 83.1-82.2
At 1-4 and sitting 16th, Baskonia bounced back in style following the most recent return of Dusko Ivanovic. Fast forward to Round 13, the tally is up to 8-5, good enough for fourth on the table. Is adding something else necessary?
#8 MACCABI PLAYTIKA TEL AVIV
Previous ranking: 5 (-3)
W-L: 7-6
Home: 4-3
Away: 3-3
Points +/-: 85.8-87.6
After six straight games in Belgrade, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv went on the road and went on a balanced 1-1 stretch against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne and Virtus Segafredo Bologna. Three more showings behind closed doors in Aleksandar Nikolic Hall are coming up. Captain John DiBartolomeo is nearing his return from injury.
#7 ANADOLU EFES ISTANBUL
Previous ranking: 11 (+4)
W-L: 7-6
Home: 5-1
Away: 2-5
Points +/-: 81.5-86.4
Ranking teams according to injuries would place Anadolu Efes in a comfortable lead. Despite missing multiple players, including Will Clyburn, Rodrigue Beaubois, Elijah Bryant, Ante Zizic, Derek Willis, and Tibor Pleiss, beating Panathinaikos and ALBA shaped a perfect two-game week. Mike Daum and Daniel Oturu arrived to reinforce the squad.
#6 PARTIZAN MOZZART BET BELGRADE
Previous ranking: 12 (+6)
W-L: 7-6
Home: 6-1
Away: 1-5
Points +/-: 87.2-85.5
With three consecutive home wins, including two in overtime, Partizan Mozzart Bet finally climbed above .500. The W-L tally improved to 7-6. And there’s more good news with Frank Kaminsky returning to action.
#5 OLYMPIACOS PIRAEUS
Previous ranking: 6 (+1)
W-L: 7-6
Home: 5-3
Away: 2-3
Points +/-: 78-75.8
Positive moments outnumber the negatives for Olympiacos, which is above .500 over the last month, since recovering from a 3-4 start. Filip Petrusev entered the fray and fellow newcomer Naz Mitrou-Long will become eligible in January, while Nigel Williams-Goss will soon be cleared for action.
#4 AS MONACO
Previous ranking: 2 (-2)
W-L: 8-5
Home: 4-2
Away: 4-3
Points +/-: 79.7-78.4
Among the strongest teams in the EuroLeague, AS Monaco is also pretty balanced between home and away contests. The approaching meeting with Fenerbahce wraps up a demanding stretch of five trips in six games.
#3 VIRTUS SEGAFREDO BOLOGNA
Previous ranking: 7 (+4)
W-L: 9-4
Home: 7-1
Away: 2-3
Points +/-: 84.1-81.8
A favorable schedule early in the season mostly kept Virtus Segafredo Bologna at home but cannot take away from the solid showings so far in the campaign. In the top six teams of the standings since Round 1 and recently nearly a constant in the third spot.
#2 FC BARCELONA
Previous ranking: 3 (+1)
W-L: 10-3
Home: 7-0
Away: 3-3
Points +/-: 83.8-77.6
Standing at least second from the beginning of the regular season, FC Barcelona is among the three teams remaining undefeated at home. Nothing to add.
