One of the most important things for a team during the season is to… protect their home court.

By Stelios Toromonides/ info@eurohoops.net

Eurohoops puts under the microscope the home records of every team in the EuroLeague this season. Which team has the most consecutive wins to the extent that their home court can be described as an impregnable fort, when was the last time they were defeated and for how many days have they kept their home court intact?

The fans’ support, the quality and mentality of the squad, but also the circumstances, can transform a team’s home court into a real palace, one that is built on solid foundations that is hard to be destroyed by the opponent.

Despite this, when we’re talking about battles at the highest level in Europe, it’s normal that defeats often occur at home, since even the best teams are constantly competing and, in fact, in a heavy and grueling schedule. So, defending your home becomes harder, while a long run of consecutive wins is noteworthy.

Eurohoops recorded how many days have gone by since the last home defeat for all 16 teams of the EuroLeague so far and draws some important conclusions.

To avoid any misunderstanding, the choice of the time period we have covered is completely random, therefore some teams will be “wronged,” like CSKA Moscow who lost a few days ago to Lokomotiv Kuban when their last defeat was almost two months ago.

Before we start the countdown, it’s worth noting that:

The holders of first place have a huge lead from those who are in second and are therefore rightly considered the best home team right now.
Only two teams are undefeated at home for two months or more, which highlights the intensity of the competition.
We refer to all the competitions a team takes part in and not just the EuroLeague.

Last home loss: January 7, 2018
Competition: VTB League
Game: CSKA Moscow – Lokomotiv Kuban 79-90

CSKA’s most recent home defeat came just a few days ago by Lokomotiv Kuban for the VTB League, in the last game they’ve played so far in all competitions. Prior to this failure, they were unbeaten at home for almost two months straight.

Since they haven’t played another game since the last time they were beaten, it makes sense that they don’t have a win or a streak of consecutive wins. We should mention that the above defeat was the first for the Muscovites in the VTB (record of 10-1), while in the EuroLeague they have a home record of 7-1, with the only negative result the one against Fenerbahce (93-95).

Last home loss: January 5, 2018
Competition: EuroLeague
Game: Bamberg – Khimki 70-74

The German champions lost at home to Georgios Bartzokas’s Khimki a few days ago and as a result they reached five defeats in a total of nine games in front of their fans in the EuroLeague. Their last win was against Olympiacos (67-65).

14. Unicaja Malaga
Last home loss: January 4, 2018
Competition: EuroLeague
Game: Malaga – Valencia 83-85

Joan Plaza’s squad was defeated at home by Valencia, in an amazing game that was decided in the details. This season in the EuroLeague they have a 4-4 record in the Martin Carpena, while in the Spanish league their record is 6 wins and 1 defeat.

Last home loss: January 2, 2018
Competition: Israel Super League
Game: Maccabi Tel Aviv – Hapoel Tel Aviv 73-77

Maccabi are trying to get back to the successes of the past in Europe and their home record is 6 wins and 3 losses. The Yad Eliyahu certainly doesn’t look like Maccabi’s old “fort,” which was impossible for rival teams to conquer. This can also be seen from the losses coming from within Israel, with the last hit coming from Hapoel Tel Aviv.

The game against Bamberg coming up next in Tel Aviv is a first class opportunity for the Israelis to return to winning ways.

12 Armani Milan

Last home loss: December 29, 2017
Competition: EuroLeague
Game: Armani Milan – Crvena Zvezda 88-91

For yet another season, despite the abundance of excellent players on their roster, Milan cannot stand out in the top club competition in Europe and are way behind in the rankings. Their mediocre home record is a natural consequence, as they have 3 wins and 5 losses, with the last one so far coming from Crvena Zvezda.

With the arrival of Kuzminskas from the NBA the situation might improve, but this will be seen on the court in the next few games, both in the EuroLeague as well as the Lega Basket.

11 Khimki

Last home loss: December 29, 2017
Competition: EuroLeague
Game: Khimki – Barcelona 65-79

Khimki are not doing too bad at home this season, as they have a record of 6-2 in the EuroLeague and 4-2 in the VTB League. Despite this, Georgios Bartzokas’s team suffered one of their two defeats at home just a few days ago and, as a result, they are far behind on our list.

Last home loss: December 21, 2017
Competition: EuroLeague
Game: Crvena ZvezdaPanathinaikos 63-69

Crvena Zvezda’s home court was always their strong point. Of course, this season, results wouldn’t suggest so as the team from Belgrade has 4 wins and as many defeats, while Panathinaikos “conquered” the Serbs’ fort almost 20 days ago.

Dealing with injury problems and returning to the highest level in Europe after several seasons seems to have impacted heavily on Valencia, who didn’t have a good first phase in the EuroLeague. Regarding the Spanish champions’ home record, they have 3 wins and 4 losses, while Zalgiris Kaunas got the break in late December.
