Picking the players was not easy. The editorial team’s 30 writers across all of Eurohoops’ editions – Greek, English, Turkish, Spanish, Russian, German – gave votes to as many (30) players from this season’s EuroLeague, but in the end the Top 10 stood out and then some.
ALL-EUROLEAGUE SECOND TEAM
KEVIN PANGOS
Zalgiris | Guard | 1.88 | 26/01/1993 | Canada
12.7 points | 2.7 rebounds | 6 assists | 0.7 steals | 0.1 blocks | 2.5 turnovers | 27:32 minutes | 14.1 PIR
In his second season in the EuroLeague, Kevin Pangos has a better understanding of the competition’s demands and has become one of Zalgiris’s protagonists in their return to the Final Four after 19 years. The proof of this is that he leads his team in points and assists (third in the competition) but also the array of career-highs in points (22), rebounds (7), assists (15) and the index rating (28).
SERGIO RODRIGUEZ
CSKA Moscow | Guard | 1.91 | 12/06/1986 | Spain
14.1 points | 2.1 rebounds | 5 assists | 0.9 steals | 0.1 blocks | 2.2 turnovers | 26:03 minutes | 14.3 PIR
It was already known that the MVP of the 2014 season does many things on the court – and does them well – but this time he went a step further. His first season in Moscow is also his most productive in eight seasons in the competition (third in points and first in assists for CSKA), where he also achieved new career highs in points (26) and the index rating (36) from the victorious playoffs against their neighbors, Khimki.
NANDO DE COLO
CSKA Moscow | Guard | 1.96 | 23/06/1987 | France
16.9 points | 2.3 rebounds | 3.9 assists | 1.3 steals | 0.1 blocks | 2.3 turnovers | 25:46 minutes | 19.8 PIR
Nando De Colo knows how to stand out in a team full of stars like few others and this season is no different. He’s first in points and steals and second in assists for CSKA Moscow, but also second in points, third in steals and the index rating in the EuroLeague. And this is not even his best season in the competition. That was 2016 when he won the MVP award.
GEORGIOS PRINTEZIS
Olympiacos | Forward | 2.05 | 22/02/1985 | Greece
12 points | 5.5 rebounds | 1.4 assists | 0.5 steals | 0.3 blocks | 1.3 turnovers | 25:35 minutes | 13.7 PIR
At 33 years of age, Georgios Printezis continues to evolve his game and remains a player-barometer for Olympiacos. He finished the regular season second in points and rebounds among his teammates, and at the same time tied his career high average in rebounds (5.5) and improved his personal best in rebounds in one game with 14 of them. An injury problem didn’t allow him to be himself in the playoffs, but he’s still one of the best players in his position.
PAULIUS JANKUNAS
Zalgiris | Forward | 2.05 | 29/04/1984 | Lithuania
11.4 points | 4.9 rebounds | 1.5 assists | 0.5 steals | 0.3 blocks | 1.2 turnovers | 22:14 minutes | 13.9 PIR
Zalgiris have been outdoing themselves throughout the entire season and Paulius Jankunas has managed to chalk up countless personal distinctions. With 11.4 points (second in his team), he’s now the fourth All-Time scorer, while his 4.9 rebounds (first in his team) have bumped him up to second place on the corresponding list. All this has placed him 12th in terms of the index rating this season, which was enough to get the Lithuanian team back into the Final Four after 19 years.
ALL-EUROLEAGUE FIRST TEAM
NICK CALATHES
Panathinaikos | Guard | 1.98 | 07/02/1989 | Greece
14.5 points | 3.8 rebounds | 8 assists | 1.7 steals | 0.1 blocks | 2.3 turnovers | 29:00 minutes | 18.5 PIR
Panathinaikos’s season overflowed with Nick Calathes and how could it be otherwise when we’re talking about his most productive season in the EuroLeague. And it’s not just what he did in offense, where he finished with the highest assist average in history and the absolute record in the playoffs (16). His average of 1.7 steals put him ahead of everyone else in the competition and at the very least proved what he can do in defense as well, which cannot be fully reflected in the stats. All of this has him in fourth place in terms of the index rating.
ALEXEY SHVED
Khimki | Guard | 1.98 | 16/12/1988 | Russia
21.8 points | 2.6 rebounds | 5.2 assists | 1.3 steals | 0.2 blocks | 3.1 turnovers | 32:12 minutes | 20.4 PIR
Alexey Shved left almost nothing behind for anyone else in the 30+4 rounds of the regular season and the playoffs. Khimki’s – and the competition’s – top scorer put up a record of total points scored in a season (740), and he leads his team in assists and steals. He also achieved career highs in points (36), assists (12) and the index rating (37).
