By winning the championship, Xavi Pascual’s team remained at the top at home, but this title is really important for the continuation of the mythical performance the Greens are currently running.
Since the 1995/1996 season, when Panathinaikos won their first European title, but also the Greek Cup, the team has gained many experiences and, in particular, many trophies, with this year’s championship marking the 23rd consecutive season that the Greens celebrate at least one title.
Whether with Boza Maljkovic, Slobodan Subotic, Zeljko Obradovic, Argyris Pedoulakis, Fragiskos Alvertis, Dusko Ivanovic, Sasha Djordjevic, or Xavi Pascual on the bench, what’s been a constant over these 23 years is the winning of titles, and this streak has made history.
With these 23 title-winning seasons – something that no other European team has achieved in the same period (1996-2018 with 37 trophies) – Panathinaikos’s record is growing in their history and the history of Greek basketball, while it’s already been registered in the annals of European basketball.
With this 23-for-23, the Greens tied the historic performances of Real Madrid (1960-1982 with 44 trophies) and Maccabi (1970-1992 with 44 trophies) and now, in the 2018/2019 season, they have a great challenge ahead of them: If they win at least one title, they will reach number 24 and become the holders of the longest streak of consecutive titles in the history of European basketball!
See in the tables below the 23 consecutive seasons with a title win for Panathinaikos, Real Madrid and Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv.
