Khimki Moscow forward Janis Timma commented that “You can’t throw out the season like that” in regards to the 2019-2020 VTB League being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Timma uploaded a picture of the VTB League standings on Instagram, with the caption: “I just wanna say that you can’t throw out season like that. We understand situation but if someone is afraid to say that publicly, it will not be me. Congratulations to @khimkibasket family, fans and our supporters & owners, it was amazing season and we showed that we deserve it.”
Khimki was the VTB standings leader with an 18-1 record, prior to the league’s cancelation. Defending champion CSKA Moscow was 15 – 4, Lokomotiv Kuban 14 – 6 and Unics Kazan 12 – 8.
Before EuroLeague’s suspension, Khimki Moscow was playing in the competition due to reaching the 2019 VTB Final. While EuroLeague spots are no longer granted based on a team’s run in domestic leagues (with the possible exception of ABA League, which is given a priority for one of the annual wild cards) starting from 2020 – 2021, it has been reported that Khimki will participate in the top-tier European competition in the upcoming season.
