The pending departure of CSKA Moscow head coach Dimitris Itoudis for Fenerbahce and the uncertainty of the participation of Russian clubs in EuroLeague Basketball competitions raises many questions, though CSKA seems to have started the lookout for a new coach.
According to reports by Walla, Giannis Sfairopoulos is a candidate for the head coach position at CSKA. The 55-year-old Greek coach parted ways with Maccabi back in February 2022 and hasn’t signed with a new team since.
Sfairopoulos is no stranger to CSKA, as he served as an assistant to Jonas Kazlauskas during the 2011-12 season. Most recently, reports surfaced in Spanish media linking him to Baskonia as a replacement for Neven Spahija, though as Eurohoops sources confirm, Baskonia has agreed on a two-year deal with Joan Penarroya.
Currently, CSKA Moscow leads the VTB League finals series against Zenit St. Petersburg 3-2 and is one victory away from lifting the trophy. Game 6 between the two teams is underway Thursday, 20:00 local time in St. Petersburg. In case Zenit ties the series, the final game will be played in Moscow either on Sunday or Monday.
